Frances: who was she? If her life had had a meaning, what was it? Long gone – she was probably long gone. This note, in the midst of a pile of papers, in a cardboard box, in a chest, in an attic (so many interlocking Matryoshka doll spaces) was perhaps her life’s only remaining trace.

Charlotte had discovered it. Her mother had told her about this girl, Frances, who had had electroconvulsive therapy more than 11 times. Her mother had been her psychiatric nurse.

Dear Miss MacKay,

You have no idea how much I really miss you. Days have gotten lonelier and seem longer since I moved.
Yesterday both Mother and Dad came. After so long (two weeks), it was good to see them. Mom’s picture was in the first section of the New York Times, as she is aiding in the dog show for the benefit of a hospital.
Today I am getting my 11th shock treatment. They are sort of fun and seem okay now I’ve grown accustomed to them. I’m on early O.T. nowadays. Also I lost four pounds this past week. I hope to lose a bit each week.
Miss Kepler is in the hospital (not the infirmary) as of yesterday. Let’s hope she’s well soon. Please write me if there’s an opportunity.

                                                       Love, Frances
