The Shadow of the Clouds: An Atlas of Remarkable Places is a project about islands in a multiplicity of forms, imaginary and real, and about communication between them. It began as a dialogue between a Portuguese artist living in Germany and a Canadian writer living in Portugal and developed over time in a way that has been at once collaborative and independent, with images and words conceived separately and shared. The words took form as an essay and a short story and from the short story characters found their way into fragments or word sketches. Each sketch is an exploration of one of the 7 heavenly virtues, derived from the Psychomachia ("Comfort of the Soul"), an epic poem by Aurelius Clemens Prudentius (AD 410) which helped to spread concepts of virtue through Europe.
